10 Useful Tips to Train Your Dog

It's a good idea to start teaching your new puppy as soon as you get him home. But where do you begin? What is the most effective method for training a puppy? What about mature dogs? How do you teach them?

Your new pet may be trained in a variety of ways. Whether you want to teach your puppy or dog yourself, attend classes, or engage a private trainer, the following basic training guidelines will help make the process go more smoothly.

1.    Select Your Dog's Name Carefully

Finding the ideal name for your new puppy or dog is half the joy of bringing them home. Did you realize, though, that certain names are better for training than others? Consider a short name that ends with a strong consonant that they can hear clearly all of the time. Puppy ears perk up when names have a powerful finish, such as "Jacky," "Mocka," and "Ginger."

If your new dog is older, he or she is probably already familiar with their name. It is, nevertheless, not impossible to change it. A new name may even signify a fresh start if your new buddy is getting out of an abusive circumstance. Dogs are incredibly adaptive creatures. If you decide to give them a new name, stick to it and your dog will soon learn to respond to it.

Whatever their name is, try to link it as much as possible with positive, enjoyable events rather than unpleasant ones. In an ideal world, your dog will associate their name with other enjoyable activities such as walks or dinnertime.

2.    Make a decision on the house rules.

Decide what your new animal friend can and cannot do before bringing them home. Is it okay for them to sleep on the bed or sit on the furniture? Are there any areas of the house that are off limits? Will they be seated at your dinner table in their own chair? You can avoid confusion — for both of you — if the rules are established early.

3.    Construct or buy a Private Den

Dogs, like people, require their own personal space. Give your puppy their own private resting space, such as a crate, as soon as feasible. Short periods of time alone in the warmth and safety of their den can benefit your dog; it may also be a useful tool for housetraining. If your puppy or dog remains calm and relaxed in their den, be sure to treat them.

4.    Assist Your Dog in Relaxing

Give your pet a warm hot-water bottle and a ticking clock when they arrive at your house. This will calm your puppy in their new environment by simulating the heat and heartbeat of littermates.

This suggestion is very crucial for a new puppy that came from a busy, noisy shelter, especially if they've had a difficult start in life. Anything you can do to make your new pet feel at ease in their new home will benefit both of you.

5.    Reward Positive Attitudes

Positive reinforcement should be used to reward your puppy or dog's excellent behavior. Use toys, affection, and lots of praise — and don't forget the goodies — to help them learn. Let them know when they've gotten it right. In a similar vein, never praise negative conduct since it will just confuse them.

6.    "Dog Time" is a great way to get some exercise.

Puppies and dogs are completely absorbed in the present moment; two minutes after doing anything, they've forgotten about it. So, whenever your dog does anything wrong, apply your preferred training method straight away so that they can draw the connection between the behavior and the punishment. Repetition will help them remember what they've learnt.

7.    Teach your dog to respond when he or she is called.

Come on in, Goldie! Good job, young man!

Come should be the first command you teach your pet. Get down on their level and command your dog to come to them by name. Get enthusiastic and provide a lot of positive reinforcement when they do. When they're distracted by food or a toy, try the "come" command next time. You'll notice the benefits of practicing this command as your puppy grows older.

8.    Dissuade You From Jumping Right Away

Puppies enjoy jumping up to meet you, and some older dogs have picked up on this behavior. Do not criticize your puppy or dog if they jump on someone; instead, turn your back on them, ignore the action, and wait until they calm down before providing positive reinforcement. Patting or praising your dog when they're "jumping up" is never a good idea.

9.    Biting and nipping are not acceptable.

Instead of criticizing your new dog, pretend you're in excruciating agony when they bite or nip you - a piercing, loud cry should suffice. The majority of dogs are taken aback and come to a halt.

If verbal cues fail, try exchanging your hand or trouser leg for a chew toy. When a puppy finds the pleasures of chewing on your beloved shoes, this switching technique might come in handy. In any case, they'd rather have a toy or a bone. If everything else fails, stop biting and ignore them.

10.                       Finish each training session on a high note.

Throughout their training, your puppy or dog has worked hard to satisfy you. Leave plenty of praise, a reward, some stroking, or five minutes of playtime for them. This practically assures that they'll show up with their tail wagging and eager to work at their next class or training session!
